While Ireland’s public schools are still referred to as “Catholic,” Guernsey said she quickly learned they are equivalent to secular American public schools — but with the option to teach religion. The lack of sacramental preparation, she said, was painfully obvious, and some schools had no desire for an orthodox Catholic witness within their walls.
